Bungie: Marathon was never a replacement for Destiny

As Bungie continues to navigate major internal changes, Studio Head Poria Torkan and Marathon Product Lead/General Manager Josh Dean have revealed plans to further “evolve” the game.

In a video released to players on September 21, Torkan and Dean discussed the future of Marathon, describing it as a “key part” of shaping Bungie’s direction moving forward.

Torkan acknowledged, “It didn’t reach as many players as we had originally hoped. But we also know and understand that the game needs to continue to evolve.”

Dean added, “We are going to lean into what makes Marathon truly unique while breaking past the genre constraints we previously set for it, allowing it to grow further. We plan to expand Marathon into a deeper survival experience, giving players more ways to tackle this dangerous alien world.”

He also outlined the team’s goals for the end of Marathon‘s first year, stating that Bungie aims to “retain the elements players already love while finding ways to give them more agency over how they play, whether in PvE or PvP.”

Perhaps most importantly, the pair explicitly confirmed that Marathon is not intended to replace Destiny. This is undoubtedly reassuring news for Destiny fans; Bungie’s previous announcement in May regarding the cessation of future content updates for Destiny 2 had been poorly received, leaving players confused and disappointed. However, it now appears the developer has moved away from the idea of completely abandoning the franchise, as Bungie has confirmed that more story and gameplay content is coming to the Destiny series.
